SLU Medical Laboratory Science Students:
Following two years of core courses (basic science and liberal arts) and one year of pre-clinical laboratory-related coursework, medical laboratory science students enter the practicum phase of the curriculum in a clinical setting under supervision.
Practicum placement is guaranteed for all MLS students who complete the junior year in good academic standing (2.5 or higher cumulative GPA and a 2.5 or higher GPA in medical laboratory science courses).
Seniors spend 20 weeks in practicum during the summer/fall semester at a variety of affiliate hospital laboratories in the St. Louis area as well as distant sites.
Students are responsible for expenses incurred with placement at affiliate hospitals outside the St. Louis metropolitan area. This includes costs associated with the health assessment (including drug screen) and criminal background check. Special funds may be available to assist those students who demonstrate financial need.
During the spring semester of the senior year all medical laboratory science seniors collaborate with faculty to develop and conduct a modest research project culminating in a formal scientific paper. Many of these projects have been presented at state and national professional conferences, some have won student research awards and some have also been published.
